One wanted for car theft, other claimed to be diplomat

Two Chowchilla men have been arrested on felony drug charges after being pulled over near a Valero gas station on Avenue 24 in Chowchilla, according to county authorities.

Richard David Velez, 44, who claims to be a U.S. diplomat, was arrested on felony drug charges for allegedly having methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart said.

Johnathan Daniel Cobian, 25, who is on probation for vehicle theft, was wanted on three warrants: one for vehicle theft, and the other two for traffic violations, and was also arrested for having methamphetamine, Stuart said.

Both men were booked into county jail shortly after 2:30 a.m. Friday. Cobian and Velez remain behind bars with bail set at $25,000 and $5,000, respectively, Stuart said...
