10 poles fall after thieves steal wire

Thieves who cut down a telephone pole Thursday in an attempt to steal copper wire caused nine more poles to collapse and forced a road closure, the sheriff’s department reported.

The Madera County Road Department was forced to shut down Avenue 11 from State Route 145 to Road 26 1/2 until the damaged poles and telecommunication lines can be replaced. Sheriff’s department spokeswoman Erica Stuart said crews are hoping to have the road back open today, weather permitting.

Sheriff John Anderson said one man suspected in the theft was arrested after an anonymous tip led Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies to a building on West Adams Avenue in Fresno.
