‘Wicked’ returns to Saroyan Theater

When the musical “Wicked” opens Wednesday at the William Saroyan Theater in Fresno, the role of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz will be played by actor Gene Weygandt.

If his name seems familiar, it might be because he has had a reoccurring role of Chief Jones this season on the NBC television show “Chicago Fire.”

While he is joining this production for the first time, Weygandt first played the role in a touring company from 2005 to 2009 in his hometown of Chicago. In 2010, he rejoined the cast of another touring production. He will be with this show about nine months unless he chooses to extend his contract.

“There are nine productions of ‘Wicked’ being staged worldwide,” said Weygandt. “The last time I played the role was in January 2011.” ...
