‘Suspicious’ fire destroys empty home

FAIRMEAD — A winddriven fire destroyed an empty house at the corner of Fairmead Circle and Palm Street, and fire authorities are calling the cause suspicious.

The house was a complete loss, according to Madera County Battalion Fire Chief Lisa Anderson. No injuries were reported.

The blaze Wednesday night about 9:15 was fueled by strong, gusty winds. Flames were 20 to 30 feet at the height of the fire.

Nearby neighbors feared the flames and blowing embers would burn into surrounding dry vegetation or reach their sheds and properties...
