‘Kidnapping’ of former supe false

In the latest bizarre twist surrounding former Madera County supervisor Harry Baker, a series of phone calls made to authorities from shortly after midnight Friday said he had been kidnapped, held for ransom, and dragged across county lines against his will.

The kidnapping was later confirmed to be a fake, Madera County Sheriff John Anderson said.

At 12:53 a.m. Friday morning, Anderson said his office received a phone call from an unidentified Oakhurst woman, where the 85-year-old Baker resides and is president of Sierra Telephone Co.

Sheriff’s spokesperson Erica Stuart said the callers — who she declined to identify — told authorities Baker had been kidnapped at a hotel in Modesto, brought back to Oakhurst to withdraw ransom money from two separate banks, and then taken back to Modesto where he was held against his will...
