Volunteers serve hundreds of meals to Maderans

Emanuel Reyes was just 21 years old when the robber pulled out the gun. As the thief threatened his life — to the point of a near-death experience, he said — Reyes knew immediately he needed to pray as he handed over the goods.

“I just delivered this powerful prayer to my Father,” Reyes said of God. “And it was amazing… the robber dropped my wallet down the street, decided to leave me alone. I knew God had given me a second chance.”

From that, Reyes said he was inspired to give back to others in the way God had given to him that fateful October night.

So like the other 20 or so volunteers from the Angeles de Fe (Angels of Faith) group affiliated with St. Joachim Catholic Church, Reyes spent Christmas Eve at Madera’s Courthouse Park handing out hot meals with a smile to hundreds of citizens and, when needed, an inspirational word about the spirit of the holiday...
