Sierra View 2nd-grader sets records in how he helps others; honored by the food bank

When Sierra View Elementary second grader William Jackson learned of the school’s upcoming food drive, he walked to his neighbors’ houses to ask for donations.

Then the 7-year-old phoned relatives and asked for more contributions. Then he went to a local golf course and asked for donations there.

Using the monetary gifts, the Madera Ranchos boy went to a grocery store and bought canned food items to add to his collection of non-perishables and took them to school.

Jackson’s efforts amassed 700 canned food items — more than is collected by some schools’ entire student bodies, said Madera County Food Bank Executive Director Ryan McWherter...
