A gang-related fight escalated into a shootout in broad daylight on N Street near 4th Street, according to police.
Madera police detective Daniel Foss said a Madera man was shot once in head and once the torso Thursday, but the injuries were not life threatening.
The victim, Freddy Velasquez, 20, underwent surgery and is hospitalized and in stable condition as of Friday, he said.
“He was shot at least twice but he will survive. He’s lost the use of an eye,” Foss said. “He’s a gang member, and he does have prior (arrests). We are not exactly sure, but he appears to be a suspect and also the victim. He may have started it and lost. It’s still under investigation but it appears they were exchanging gunfire ... in broad daylight — with revolvers,” Foss said...

Why are they calling Mr.
Why are they calling Mr. Velázquez a 'victim'?
victim
Maybe you should get shot twice by some idiots and the madera tribune will call you a suspect instead of a victim..
Because he is a victim he was
Because he is a victim he was walking and a car pulled up with two guys and shot at him.Madera tribune needs to get its fact straight and talk to the witnesses that seen the shooting. I so happen to seen the whole thing!
He is a victim
I live nearby and seen him walking when a green car pulled up next to him and two guys with guns start to shoot at him he then ran. This article is ridiculous he didn't have a gun or started anything from what I seen! MADERA tribune needs to get thier facts straight the suspects looked young 16-20 around that age
