A retired educator that was the keynote speaker at the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast on Thursday morning encouraged attendees to put their lives in the hands of a higher power and to follow God’s will.

“The nation depends on you,” speaker Gary Beene told the nearly 400 people in Hatfield Hall at the Madera District Fairgrounds.

The 12th annual breakfast, hosted by the Madera Ministerial Association and the Chamber of Commerce, was one of 40,000 National Day of Prayer observances held throughout the country each year, according to the chamber.

The theme of this year’s breakfast was “One Nation Under God,” and Beene talked about the toll worry can take on people’s lives...

Tami Jo, first let me thank you on the wonderful articles you wrote concerning the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast and LOVE MADERA. We go back so many years that its sometime hard to count when I pass up the fingers and toes. (A side note, I was in the Madera High School Class with your brother, Ralph.)
I wanted to comment on the person that sounded off in the Red Line, which in my humble opinion brings (The Red Line, it should be renamed The Flat Line) much division into our community. The person objected to your column concerning your reference of God as "she". Tami, when in Genesis 1:26 that God said "Let US make man (mankind) in OUR image, after OUR likeness: let THEM have dominion over... 27 So God created man in HIS own image, and in the image of God created He him; MALE and FEMALE created He them. In every one of us is 50% the opposite sex, I'm 50% female and you are 50% male!!!! Genetically I have XY sex chromosomes of which XX makes female, so theoretically I'm 1/2 female (X), you are XX female but have 1/2 of the sex chromosome X that makes you, you! So if God was all male, were did female come from. That was why in God's ultimate wisdom only the male was first created, then woman (the sex gene pool now complete for reproduction). I know you know this, that is why you write like you do. So, that the slice of gravy, no matter how thin you slice it, still has... two sides! A great book to read that was a best seller a few years ago was called "The Shack". Where a man that had lost a child to a molester, comes to grip with a healing process as he goes to the place and finds God, desiring to heal the man of his hurts and finding out the awesome attributes of God. In one character he meets is a woman... Holy Spirit. I believe in God the Father, Jesus, the Son and Holy Spirit as the Trinity. So, the big question to the caller, if God was all male, and He created male and female, where did the female come from. Oh yes, by the way the caller, he was 1/2 female!!! Pastor Roger Leach
