Today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fresno Fairgrounds, 1121 Chance St., will be the Central California Girl Scouts celebration of World Thinking Day. Admission is $5 and a donation of a toiletry item, while parking is $5.

The event is designed to introduce the valley to Girl Scouting. This day-long celebration’s theme “We can save our planet,” teaches ecology while highlighting how girls will benefit from the lessons of scouting.

I joined Brownies in the second grade and ultimately attained the rank of Cadet Scout with Troop 128. Our scout leader was Howard School teacher Ruth Fishken.

She had five daughters that were part of our scouting activities. We had an assortment of assistant scout leaders through the years, including Doris McCarty, Janet Nyberg and my mother...
