Reading The Red Line in Tuesday’s edition, I see I got smacked pretty hard by someone who thinks I’m an idiot for promoting fireworks.

The sad truth is that every year even with the so-called Safe and Sane fireworks there are some who are careless, inept or otherwise impaired. Often their fireworks get out of hand resulting in devastating and dangerous fires. Thank you, caller, for providing another perspective and for reading The Madera Tribune. Consider me properly chastised!

While buying my tickets for the California Lotto this week, it occurred to me, as it often does, what a paradox the gambling laws are. Either gambling is a wrong or it isn’t. This is another case of something that can be a crime under certain conditions, but perfectly legal under others.

If the state and Indian tribes can profit from gambling, why can’t everyone? Card parlors are legal, why aren’t slot machines or a dice game in an alley? ...
