Will kids eat those new lunches?

It’s probably a good thing that school cafeterias will start having more fresh fruits and vegetables on their menus — good, at least, for those who eat it. But for those who don’t eat it, there may be unintended consequences.

Hamburger hangouts that cater to kids may open up across the street or down the block from high schools and junior high schools.

In times past, many kids didn’t care for the food served in school cafeterias. Well-cooked green beans, peas and corn were the vegetables, along with mashed potatoes and gravy. The meat was usually ground beef or tuna, mixed in with the gravy. A carton of milk came with the meal.

It wasn’t actually bad food. Even the teachers would eat it. But kids being kids, as soon as they were old enough to leave the campus for the lunch hour, they would go across the street or down the block to the teen hangout, which served fresh hamburgers, French fries and Coke or Pepsi. Their vegetables were lettuce and tomato on the hamburgers — assuming they wanted them.

Another option for kids who didn’t like school lunch was to bring lunch from home, in a sack or lunch pail. This required mom, dad or the kid to get up early enough to make the lunch, which might consist of a sandwich, some carrot sticks and/or celery sticks and some cookies or a Hostess Twinkie. Usually, there was a Thermos bottle of milk, too.

Nobody ever inspected the lunches to see whether they were nutritious, or how many calories they had. Nobody starved or got too fat bringing lunch from home.

By the way, there were no free school breakfasts then. Your parents were expected to feed you breakfasts at home.

Whatever happened to today’s parents? No wonder their kids are too fat. Other people feed them.
