I learned something new this week and thought I’d pass it on.

I called the Madera Public Works Department because there are a couple of city lights out on a street behind my house. I talked to a nice lady who took my report and asked if I knew the street light numbers. I didn’t even know the lights were numbered. So yesterday, I called back with the numbers and the work order will proceed.

So many things have their own code and language. Government bureaus love acronyms.

In the newspaper business, we follow a set of style rules issued by the Associated Press, taught to journalism students and followed by newsrooms around the country. Years ago, when I started in this business, my editor told me that it didn’t matter if the style guide made sense to me or not, we do it this way because this is the way it is done...
