On May Day, Madera celebrated its National Day of Prayer with the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. This annual gathering in Madera is one of 42,000 held throughout the United States, said Lois Grow, breakfast committee chairman.
The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast committee is comprised of Grow, Karen Leasure, Sonia De La Torre, Jim Taubert, David Votaw, Debi Bray, Lou Weibe, Roger Leach and Ryan McWherter, and spent the last six months preparing for the event. The Christian band Change of Heart, led by Weibe, performed their uplifting music again this year.
The keynote speaker was former Fresno mayor, television and TV and movie star Alan Autry. Speaking in a down-home folksy tone, Autry commended our hometown for its Love Madera project.
The two kinds of civic leaders are planters and harvesters, said Autry. The harvesters are the people who get the notoriety for the accomplishments. The planters are the ones who start the service projects and put in the work to make a project successful...
