First, let me thank you for all the emails, calls and best wishes on my retirement from the Parks Department. I felt it only fitting at my retirement “party” (?) there was everyone from dignitaries (?) to those hard-working guys out in our parks, pool and seemingly everywhere sometimes.

Thanks to all who took the time to make that a memorable occasion. However, when yours truly discovered Mayor Brett Frazier and future Mayor Robert Poythress would be in attendance, I decided to change into long pants out of respect.

Now here comes the backfire: Mayor Frazier, knowing my reputation (not that one) showed up wearing his best pair of khaki shorts. Thanks, Mr. Mayor, and when I attend a council meeting I’ll be back in my favorite pair. At least through October.

Not exactly conjuring up an image of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Sweet Hitchhiker,” Thursday I espied GBS’s Bud Smith walking along the railroad tracks on Pine Street. In fact, Bud looked more like folksinger Woody Guthrie, without the guitar on his back...
