It’s going to be a big weekend with Bobby Soxers arriving from all over the country for the big tournament. It kicked off early yesterday morning (5 a.m.) when a “celebrity” Homerun Derby was held at Lions Town and Country Park. Didn’t know and don’t know if our civic leaders could, or did, rise that early except possibly Mayor Robert (the Runner) Poythress.

In fact the few homeless in the park were probably up earlier than usual with ball field lights being turned on around 5 a.m. and the usual Thursday morning food giveaway on the Howard Road side of the park.

Then you have the regular dog-walkers, exercisers and (back to the homeless), those folks looking in garbage cans for recyclables. It’s our largest and most used park and the Parks crews do a really great job and this weekend they will be extra busy.

Bad timing. All those folks filling our hotels, motels and restaurants will be terrific for our economy. Too bad all the construction is going on around town...
