Happy birthday to Philip Oberti. He and his pretty gal, Klina, have returned from celebrating on the beaches of Hawaii. Don’t know if Philip grabbed a board and went surfing the “big ones” off of Waimea, but I’m sure the two have a couple tales to tell yours truly on our next meeting.

The last time I remember braving the water was going surfing with my teenage son. This (what were you thinking!) idea occurred after not “dropping into the curl” for 25 years. Even with a wetsuit the water seemed as cold as the inside of my fridge, and the waves as tall as mountains. Much colder and bigger than I remember in 1966. Wiped out a couple of times and decided to watch my son ride the waves from the beach.

This just in from that garden gal, Linda Sloan. This Saturday it’s time again for the Glorious Garden Tour. Linda also tells us the Madera Master Gardeners’ Three Sisters demonstration garden is coming along nicely at Madera Community College Center on Avenue 12. Hmm, I used to have a small garden in college, too.

Most of you probably missed it, but Sunday was Earth Day. Well, if you walked on grass (especially barefoot), smelled a flower, cursed the heat, watched the sun rise or watched it set, then you celebrated Earth Day...
