Americans gave thanks for all sorts of things yesterday. Yours truly simply gave thanks that I’m still pounding the keys under the watchful eye of my gal. I did wish happy Hanukkah to a Jewish friend and he replied with “Happy Thanksgiving.”

This is the first time that Thanksgiving and Hanukkah have fallen on the same day since 1888. It won’t happen again for another 80,000 years. One wonders whether we will even have those two great observances by then. Or, if there will be anyone around to observe anything.

But hey, didn’t mean to get you down. This is Black Friday. I’ll be celebrating in my usual way … completely ignoring it. It’s all hypocritical. Yesterday, Americans were thankful for everything. Today, they are fighting over TVs and electronic stuff on sale. It is a day people spend money they don’t have on things they really don’t need.

Okay, I promise this item won’t be a downer. They’ve been seen running all over town and now they will be running for gold. Congrats and good luck to the Madera South High School Boys and Girls Cross-Country teams on their Valley Championships, and go get ‘em at the State Championships at Woodward Park tomorrow. Okay, I feel better now...
