Students cook up prize-worthy recipes

Favorite Foods Day is an event that we have every year where 4-H kids make their favorite dish and compete for prizes.

This year it was on Jan. 21 in Chowchilla. On this same day, there is also cooking showmanship, where students identify cooking utensils and accessories. There’s also consumer foods judging, where we must pick which fruit, vegetable, or meat is the best in a group and then explain why.

There are many different categories such as cakes, cookies, made-from-a mix, poultry, lamb, healthy foods, table setting and decorated foods, to name a few. Coarsegold 4-H did very well.

Tryston Lewis got a first place medal in the made-from-a-mix category. His entry was “Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes,” and he also got a second place medal in the cookies category with his “Italian Almond Macaroons.”...
