We all know that former Rep. Newt Gingrich lost the Republican presidential primary to Mitt Romney, and it’s probably because Romney was smart, worked harder and spent more money. Gingrich, on the other hand, muffed his campaign almost from the beginning and never could get the money together to make the long-term campaign that Romney was prepared for in every way.
No question, Romney earned the nomination by working harder and smarter. But I miss Newt, in a way. He has a facility with words. Sometimes, those words get him into trouble, but at other times, they ring true. Here are some select Newt Gingrich quotes worth remembering:
“Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.”
“You can’t trust anybody with power.”
“If the Soviet empire still existed, I’d be terrified. The fact is, we can afford a fairly ignorant presidency now.”
“The bigotry question goes both ways. There’s a lot more anti-Christian bigotry today than there is concerning the other side. None of it gets covered by the news media.”
“Imagine a judicial nominee said ‘my experience as a white man makes me better than a Latina woman.’ Wouldn’t they have to withdraw? New racism is no better than old racism.”
“And my point was one I think that you’d agree with, which is there’s no room in America for a black racist, a Latino racist, or a white racist, or an Asian racist, or a Native American racist. Now, we’re either color blind or we’re not color blind.”
“Frankly, Gov. Romney in his career has created more jobs than the entire Obama cabinet combined, so he could actually talk about it.”
“A mere 40 years ago, beach volleyball was just beginning. No bureaucrat would have invented it, and that’s what freedom is all about.”
I stole these quotes from the Web site BrainyQuote. There are more of them if you care to look them up.
