A road crew has blocked off access to Howard Road from Pine Street. Longtime Maderans know this goofy intersection as HOPY. The acronym stands for Howard Road, Olive Avenue, Pine and Yosemite streets. The markings on the k-rail barrier reads UPRR, but appear to be applied freehand with spray paint.

Is this a project sanctioned by the Union Pacific Railroad?

I stopped at GBS, to ask my friend Dennis Smith if the merchants on that street were notified of this impending closure right in the middle of the Christmas shopping season. Later at the grocery store, I saw 47th Place Carpet owner Chris Simonian with her sister Stephanie. Neither business was warned.

Since December is the make it or break it retail month, every shop on Howard Road should have been informed of this impending predicament. Just how long has it been scheduled? ...
