Good news. Tuesday, May 29, the final Master Plan and Environmental Review meeting was held in the evening at Children’s Hospital of Central California overlooking the San Joaquin River. A number of interested parties from both sides of the river have attended the sessions. A number of suggestions have been submitted including approaches to the site, parking areas, convenience and types of use of the property, fencing, appropriate vegetation and not having the trails close to roads. Funding for the project was made available through the San Joaquin River Conservancy and the State Wildlife Conservation Board as a result of Proposition 40 (2002).

The final Master Plan concept has been refined from three initial concepts and two design workshops. The Master Plan and Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration are available for review on the Madera County Planning Department viewable documents web page under “Madera County River West Plans.

Quoting from the Master Plan, “The River West-Madera Master Plan outlines the creation of a dynamic open space sanctuary in the heart of the San Joaquin River Parkway, balancing recreation and preservation of the Parkway’s outstanding biological and cultural resources.”

The east end of the project is Highway 41 and the west end is approximately across the river from the Fig Garden golf course...
