I hope everyone is surviving these dog days of summer. Stay hydrated and keep cool the best you can. If you have the opportunity for a respite to a cooler locale, take it. That’s what we did last week. I spent half of last week in Santa Clara and enjoyed a much cooler climate.

I am glad Mercury has ceased to be in retrograde. Astrometry tells us that several times a year the planet Mercury will appear to have reversed its course across the heavens based on the position of the Earth in its orbit. Even those who find astrology largely hokum can still be affected by this celestial sleight of hand.

Mercury rules things like travel and communication. Contracts and other business dealings should not be conducted when Mercury is in a retrograde period.

I have been a bit off my game recently so the position of Mercury escaped my notice — almost. I was due at a 7 a.m. meeting Thursday, so we got up at 2 a.m. and arrived at the Santa Clara Hyatt at 6. I went to the desk to see if, per chance, I could check in before my meeting, but the desk clerk said the hotel was full. I had my confirmation number and when they cross-referenced it with their reservation system, they found my name, but I had arrived a full week early...
