We all knew it was coming. And when Michael Phelps won his 19th Olympic medal, the discussion could no longer be avoided.

Is Phelps the greatest Olympic athlete ever?

If medal count is the sole criteria, then you would have to say yes. But if I am the one making the determination, then winning the most hardware is not the only barometer.

He’s the finest swimmer ever. Period. Even prior to the London Games, his performance at Beijing solidified his place as the best ever. He won eight gold medals, set eight Olympic records and seven world records...
