Open stadium a distraction, potentially dangerous

What I witnessed at the Coyote football practice Monday night was disturbing. The coaching staff and players were working hard to learn the new pistol Wing-T offense. And with nearly all the starters from last year’s team gone, these young players really need to be sharp and attentive.

But the decision by Madera Unified School District to open Memorial Stadium to the public oftentimes makes that nearly impossible. Would we unlock the gates to the swimming pool and have no one supervising? How about the weight room?

No. Because to do this would be irresponsible. Why is the stadium any different?

Monday night probably 70 people were using the facility. There was a motorcycle taking laps around the all-weather track. While mothers were pushing baby strollers, mind you. A guy was spinning doughnuts on the synthetic turf field with his remote 4x4. Kids were playing in the long jump pits. This is a recipe for disaster...
