Fittingly, just after my retirement from the Parks Department, it is Old Timers Week. Congratulations to this year’s King and Queen, Bill Wood and Lorraine Ocheltree. They are not only “cool” old timers, but go way back in Madera County history. This year’s well deserved honor as grand marshals are the always affable Tom Schoettler and his pretty and charming gal, Ila.

Indeed, this week we honor old timers. I’m not sure I’ve yet to be included in that group, but I did notice a couple of items in the Community Calendar that may befit this week.

The Madera High class of 1957 will be holding their reunion Old Timers Day at the Elks Lodge. Not to be outdone because they are a decade later, the class of 1967 (there’s that year again) will be having their get-together in October at the Country Club. I have many memories of the class of 1967. (Note to David Loquaci: You guys are not the reason I left for San Francisco)

I’ve been occasionally writing about this young and future scribe’s days in the City by the Bay in 1967 during the Summer of Love. This past Saturday, this member of the peace and love generation saw hundreds of my fellow townsfolk gather to “Love Madera.” Wonderful people, young and old, from all walks of life and churches, service clubs, schools, and just good folks, spread out across our fair city to help make this a better community...
