Nobody is taking this drought lightly; we are all in serious trouble. On my way to a meeting of the Madera County Historical Society the other night, I ran into a group who had gathered at the steps of the old courthouse to pray for rain. I didn’t stop to join them, but I probably should have.

That was two weeks ago, and we are still waiting for rain.

Now, I am not trying to pick a quarrel with the Almighty, but I am remembering a time when the weatherman smiled more favorably on Maderans. It was 52 years ago this week.

The headlines of The Madera Tribune on Jan. 22, 1962, told the story: “Snowstorm Strikes Madera Area; Cold, Slippery Roads force Schools to Close.” ...
