This won’t take long. Where’s that soapbox? The American Lung Association’s most recent top five polluted cities are Bakersfield, Hanford, Los Angeles, Visalia, and of course, Fresno.

The biggest culprit is traffic and gasoline consumption. But we have to keep driving and to keep driving we have to keep buying the stuff. It makes a lot of oil company CEOs rich and able to live in much cleaner cities. Not to mention giving millions to politicians to keep funding away from developing alternative power.

The above can also cause a lot of cancer deaths. But a plethora of Maderans will be helping in the fight against the dreaded disease this weekend at the Relay For Life at Lions Town & Country Park. Those folks are always coming up with creative fundraising ideas, and this year one of the most shocking (they say “unique”) is a “Leon Emo Look-A-Like” contest.

Yours truly will give a gift certificate for a dinner for two at The Vineyard to the winner, and if enough girls enter, another dinner for two to the winning gal. Judging is at 2 p.m. on the relay stage. Color and length of hair is not a determining factor. But get your shorts, tennis shoes, and hats on. Only $5 and all of it goes to Madera’s relay. I told the committee they’d be lucky to get five entries. I hope you prove me wrong...
