A controversy that has been brewing over on the coast recently has grabbed my attention. A school district in Salinas has named its new-est elementary school after the California outlaw, Tiburcio Vasquez. Not unexpectedly, that decision has brought out opponents and defenders.

Critics of the name surfaced quickly. The city’s mayor, Joe Gunter, a former police detective, assailed the decision, saying the district should not “be honoring people who are criminals.”

Likewise, the Monterey County Deputy Sheriff Association and the Salinas Police Officer Association publicly condemned the action...
