This scribe and meanderer was saddened to hear of the loss of that ultimate meanderer of “California’s Gold,” Huell Howser. Never quite got used to that Tennessee twang of his, butsure enjoyed his adventures to spots throughout the state. Even if they seemed not so unusual, or lacking in entertainment, it was Howser’s demeanor and enthusiasm that made his shows worth watching.

Sorry, Irish fans, yours truly didn’t watch much of the overhyped National Championship game between Notre Dame and Alabama. After all, it was over by the end of the first quarter.

However, by turning the channel too quickly I did miss several ESPN shots of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron’s sweetheart, Katherine Webb, the current Miss Alabama. But from what I hear, that 73-year-old announcer and “looker” (in more ways than one) Brent Musburger and the camera crews of ESPN did their utmost to liven up the boring broadcast with frequentshots of, in Musburger’s words, “a lovely woman” and stating “…quarterbacks get all the good-looking women,” and finally and thankfully without getting into details, said, “AJ’s doing some things right down in Tuscaloosa.”

Congrats to ex-supervisor Ronn Dominici on his retirement from 12 yearsserving the people of the county of Madera. I hear Ronn and his pretty gal, Cheryl, want to do some traveling and adventuring in the desert. Well, I hope they find a good guide. As for the next couple years for the people of the county and the next board, all I can say is good luck...
