This may conclude the story of Jody Roberts, aka Jane Dee Williams... or it may not.
The tale until now, in case you’ve just started reading, is that reporter Jody Roberts, 27, disappeared Oct. 20, 1985, from her newspaper job in Tacoma Wash., where I knew her, then showed up again five days later in Denver, where she didn’t have the faintest idea who she was.
After treatment in a mental ward that did nothing to cure her profound amnesia, she changed her name to Jane Dee, studied college Russian for three years and worked at a fast-food restaurant. Then, she moved to Alaska, winding up in Sitka, where she married fisherman Dan Williams, had two sets of girl twins and was developing a Web site design business, at which she was said to be very good.
And then ... somebody recognized her and the long-lost Jody (Jane) was rediscovered after 12 years. She was reunited with her parents, who immediately fell in love with their grandchildren, and all seemed well, even though Jane (Jody) said she didn’t remember the parents or anything about her previous life before Denver, and wanted to hang onto her Sitka privacy.
Apparently that was not to be. After a few weeks in the spotlight of fame, she was reported to have hired a Hollywood agent and to have said she was going to write a book about her life, work on a television documentary and appear on news shows.
Then... she seems to have disappeared again.
I got hold of the wife of a Dan Williams in Sitka who said Jane Dee, aka Jody Roberts, went south not long after she was rediscovered, leaving the twins with her husband, and as far as this Mrs. Williams knew, Jane-Jody never returned. This Mrs. Williams, by the way, is not the wife of Jody’s husband, but of another DanWilliams.
Jody (or Jane) seems once again to be in the wind. There is no record I can find of her having written a book or made a movie. The phone numbers of her parents and her sister in Oregon have been disconnected. There’s no phone listed for her apparently exhusband, Dan Williams, although he still lives in Sitka, where he is known as a good citizen and all-around nice guy.
Has she disappeared again?
I’ve got some feelers out, so news of her may yet turn up. If it does, I’ll let you know.
But in the meantime, her fascinating life remains a mystery.
