I lost someone important to me this week. For years he was my bartender. He poured my drinks and listened to my problems. He offered sage advice or sometimes just told me to quit whining and suck it up!

When I was in college, I thought I had things figured out but I didn’t. A friend, Walter Pimentel, told me hilarious anecdotes about the manager of the cocktail lounge at Madera Valley Inn.

Arthur Gibson Virgo Jr. of the Livingston Virgos died last Saturday. Gib was at times a curmudgeon and always quite a character. I loved him dearly.

It was the mid-1970s and Madera had some great little watering holes. Lucca’s Italian Restaurant and the Village Chinese Restaurant both had cocktail lounges. Lucca’s was very upscale and on Friday and Saturday night they had live music from Union Pacific band. It was THE place to go in Madera...
