Martinez takes hard road back to wrestling and family

Former Madera High standout wrestler Miguel Martinez always felt a rare sense of control during his matches. No matter the venue or opponent, Martinez knew he could likely dictate the outcome regardless of the circumstances.

But some very challenging situations in his life that most never have to deal with at such a young age caused his life to spiral out of control during his sophomore year. It nearly cost him everything. Even to the point of not finishing high school or ever stepping on the mat again.

Martinez, who graduated in May went 30-18 as a freshman and followed it up with a sophomore season in which he was 25-15. It seemed clear that Martinez was on his way to joining some elite company in Coyote wrestling lore.

But the summer prior to his junior year, his girlfriend became pregnant. Martinez suddenly was thrust into having to consider things with far more weight than merely living up to his potential on the mat — he now needed to find a way to take care of a child and assume the responsibility of being a father...
