Labor Day, the last summer holiday, starts, well, probably around early afternoon today. And if nobody is (supposedly) working Monday, shouldn’t it be called Non-Labor Day? However, with Labor Day sales a lot of folks will be out and about. Of course, for our citizen soldiers, the cops and firefighters, there is no rest.
Up around the docks of the Bay (not “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay”) the longshoremen will probably be doing their hard work “On the Waterfront.” Not to take away from their labor, but I think it was the late George Carlin who said, “In labor news: longshoremen walked off the piers today; rescue operations are continuing.”
Tonight at the Elks Lodge you can have a chance to help some kids increase their vocabulary — specifically, third graders in schools throughout Madera city and county. Timi Milor and her sidekick, Debbie Samora, along with some dedicated lodge members, will host what has become the annual Dinner for Dictionaries that will help purchase over 2,000 of the word books for all those future wordsmiths.
Tickets are just 10 bucks and there are takeouts available. And before you ask, I already have two dictionaries in my study and I promise to start using both of them very soon...
