Congratulations to Philip and Carmen Gallegos on being named this year’s King and Queen of Old Timers’ Day. I’m sure, though I have met them several times, they don’t remember this scribe. From the lovely Carmen at James Department Store, and school bus driver Philip, they always greeted me with a smile that would last the day. It is a greatly deserved honor for a great couple.

I wish I could have been at their crowning Sunday during the Historical Society’s annual ice cream social at the museum, but I felt like I had been crowned in a different way and couldn’t make it. I couldn’t attend despite the personal invite by phone from Mary Toschi a few days before. However, I will soon take Mary up on her offer for a tour of our terrific museum.

Sad news is what I received from my longtime pal Bobby Kahn this past weekend. He informed this scribe of the death of Gibb Virgo, a most-well-liked and good-natured personality of Madera for many years. Gibb was the owner of Someplace Else Again and besides being the owner, and bartending, was the head cook (and chief bottle washer and whatever else it took to bring smiles to his many loyal customers).

For over a decade, every Wednesday, I would take my secretary, who also happened to be my mother-in-law to lunch at “Gibb’s place.” We were never disappointed. Gibb had a lot of friends, a lot of golf buddies and a friend who happened to be a writer who will miss him dearly...
