Don’t you think pomegranates are beautiful? Their juicy red seeds look like a treasure chest full of rubies.

There is a fun cooking contest coming up in the Madera District Fair, called P is for Pomegranate (sponsored by the Madera Chamber of Commerce Tourism Alliance). Entry forms, which must be turned in by 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, can be anything from appetizers to desserts.

There will be cash prizes awarded, with $75 for first, $50 for second and $25 for third, plus additional prizes of $20, $15 and $10. Enter one whole cake or loaf, one dozen pieces, one pint or a dish to serve six. If you can’t find any pomegranates, the juice is always available to use as an ingredient.
