Flying through the air in a B-17 during World War II or spreading sulfur over a vineyard, Ray Pool is a rock star. Madera’s agricultural community threw a big party in his honor Thursday night. The Madera Chamber of Commerce held its Senior Farmer of the Year awards dinner at the Madera Municipal Golf Course, honoring Pool as its 2014 Senior Farmer of the Year. He and his wife Audrey spent the evening surrounded by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ray’s selection was commemorated by the California State Assembly and Senate, represented by Madera County’s own Assemblyman Frank Bigelow, R-O’Neals, and State Sen. Anthony Cannella, R-Ceres, represented by Louise Farley. Congressman Jim Costa, D-Fresno, sent his congratulatory salute via field representative Kristina Solberg.

The Madera County Board of Supervisors, represented by Supervisor Rick Farinelli, presented a proclamation, and Mayor Robert Poythress presented him with yet another accolade for his many years of service to the community from the Madera City Council.

Following this presentation, Ray asked Poythress, vice president of Citizen’s Business Bank, for a loan for his next project. Completely nonplussed Poythress promised to write him a check...
