Tuesday marked the 78th birthday of Elvis Presley.
News reports said fans from as far away as Japan and Brazil descended on Graceland, Presley’s former home in Memphis, to celebrate the birth of the “King of Rock and Roll.”
Growing up, I liked Elvis well enough but I was more a Beatles and Monkees fan. My husband was another story. He and his mother Ann Mildred Nix were huge Elvis fans. During his career, Elvis performed in Fresno twice and my husband and mother-in-law were in the audience both times.
I remember exactly where I was when I heard the King had died. I had just gotten off work at Madera Radio Dispatch and stopped by the Madera Valley Inn for a drink and to visit with the bartender Malcolm Gatz. On the bar’s jukebox was Elvis’s last single “Moody Blues.”...
