Guess what? It’s summer time! Yes, everybody knows that, but maybe a few people don’t know about the annual Madera District Fair and its cooking contests.

The fair will be held Sept. 6-9, with this year’s theme being, “Party Down in Lumber Town,” which gives reference to the Madera area’s historical connection with the forest and timber industry.

If you think you would like to participate in some of the cooking contests in this year’s fair, today we will start out by featuring recipes that can be entered in the annual T. Jean Burmer Culinary Contest.

Every year there is a new ingredient to take the spotlight, and this year it is raspberries. As the rules state, “From appetizers to desserts, enter any recipe showcasing raspberries.” An entry is one whole cake, loaf, pie or one dozen pieces, such as cookies.
