There are no more amateurs in the Olympics.
The minute athletes step off the podium, they are revenue generators whose exploits will now be exploited. Agents and corporations swarm on the athletes in order to turn a medal into money.
I guess that’s not a bad thing, but for me it kind of ruins my naïve assumption that there is still a semblance of purity about the Games.
But now, athletes don’t even have to wait until after they compete. There still might be pride at winning, but for the U.S. women’s soccer team, a big pay day is coming if it defeats Japan and wins the gold medal...
