I got my ballot in the mail this week. I am on permanent Vote by Mail status. There is still time to register to vote at the Madera County Clerk’s Office for this election. Registration is also available online for anyone who has a signature on file with the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Visit the Madera County Web site or the Secretary of State Web site for information. Deadline to register to vote is Oct. 22. Do not let a small percentage of the people decide who leads our country.

There are a lot of propositions on this cycle’s ballot. I have been enjoying Mr. Doud’s columns on the various ballot measures. The television ads on the propositions are all misleading and confusing. The commercials masquerade as voter advice but many of them feel like emotional blackmail or a pitch from a snake oil salesman. I’ll be glad when we are past them.

I don’t know where that half-century plus went, but it has been a fun ride. In so many ways, I feel the same as when I was a kid. I wish I knew as much now as I did when I was 16.

I fondly remember the thrill of spending fall Saturdays driving to the mountains to meet rainstorms. Now I hate driving in the rain. What happened to the joy of riding around aimlessly with friends? It feels like I can almost touch the time of Friday night football and after-game dances in the boys’ gym. All I needed to be happy was to hang out with my crowd and dance all night. I miss the feeling of invincibility when I thought I was 10 feet tall and bullet proof. Now everything scares me...
