Do you know what time it is? Don’t glance at your watch, as I don’t mean time of day. It’s the time of year to start preparing for the annual Madera District Fair’s special cooking contests!

Our family of readers can be proud that they are some of the very best cooks in the U.S.A. If you’ve never entered something you have prepared in the contests, give it some thought this year. Show that you can compete with the best. We can explore recipes right here that relate to the various contests.

The fair will be held Sept. 5 through 8 with the theme of Nuttin’ but Fun. The food contest entry deadlines are Tuesday, August 13 by 6 p.m. The T. Jean Burmer Contest (sponsored by T. Jean Burmer) this year is all about cupcakes. You must make them from scratch, as no mixes are allowed.

Find more information about the rules and prizes for all the contests at and click on Exhibit Hall section. There will also be a contest for those who can be creative with cake mixes, called the Think Outside the Box Cake Mix contest (sponsored by Save Mart Supermarket, Country Club Drive). Today’s recipes will be ideas for both of those special contests. More to come next week! ...
