DeRuyter closing practices is not the best move

I’m not sure exactly what new Fresno State football coach Tim DeRuyter hopes to accomplish by closing practices to the public.

The only one fans will get to watch will be on Aug. 11.

During Pat Hill’s time here, not only were the fans welcome, but they were encouraged to show up at practice. And for a week, it was always a Bulldog fan-fest. High school coaches from around the Valley were welcomed and families with kids in tow were thrilled to be able to get up close and feel a part of the team.

This isn’t College Station, Texas, where DeRuyter came from. It’s Fresno. We do things a little different here. I’m not sure DeRuyter understands that yet. Hill spent years making the Fresno State brand throughout the entire Valley. And he spent chunks of the summer barnstorming the Valley with his caravan...
