Events are moving for the San Joaquin Parkway. Reminds me of the river, sometimes flowing smoothly, other times in an eddy or rushing ahead. The current is running pretty strongly right now.

It’s migratory bird season and we are able to see, and sometimes hear, as singles, pairs or that picturesque V of ducks or geese wend their way. The four thousand protected acres along the San Joaquin River continue to offer food and shelter to permanent residents and passers-through alike. Even the holding ponds distributed throughout the area provide a chance to get a good look at the passers through.

It’s good news that the Ball Ranch has been opened on the weekends for fishing, presently on the weekends. This property, located on the Fresno side of the river below Friant, includes a longtime large fishing pond accessible for anglers from the bank or by small boat. There is no boat ramp, so we are limited to boats that can be carried to the bank. There is an entry fee of $6 to cover supervision and other costs. For information, visit or call 248-8480, ext. 101.
