Blasting them for Mother’s Day

Texas Ranger (not a lawman, a ballplayer) Josh Hamilton became the 16th major leaguer to hit four home runs in a single game. He joins the likes of the Giants’ Willie Mays, Joe Adcock of the Milwaukee Braves and the first guy to slug four out of the park, Bobby Lowe, who accomplished the quadruple blasts May 30, 1894. Lowe played for the Boston Beaneaters. Now there’s a team name, but oh to be in the clubhouse after a game. Still, I bet their mothers were proud of them.

That brings us to this: Sunday is the big day for mothers and I’ve had the thrill and fun of having three of them. Just as I got used to the mannerisms of one, poof, she’d be gone and up would pop another. Dad was a heck of a pilot, but for a while he was pulling girlfriends and wives out of the air like a magician with a hat and a bunch of rabbits.

Maybe it was me that caused Dad to keep trying. He once said with a laugh that I was the first to give mom “feedback.” But that was obviously going to happen while a toddler after the strained carrots she spooned me. By the time I was 10 I had pretty much “broken in” my second mom. After the misuse (bad timing) of a bad word she hollered, “Watch your mouth!” So I went into the bathroom, locked the door, and waited.

Grabbing one of Dad’s magazines, I waited even longer. Finally, when nature called, she came knocking. “What are you doing in there?” she asked. “Just what you told me to do,” I replied. “Watching my mouth in the mirror.” She was not amused...
