Beware Friday the 13th

People who are superstitious about numbers may believe today, Sept. 7 has a lucky connection. More people tend to be scared of the number 13 and especially when it falls on a Friday. This week brings the first Friday the 13th of the year 2013. There is one more and it comes in December exactly 13 weeks hence.

The talk of doom and gloom associated with the number 13 led me to embrace it at a young age. When playing games of chance I will go for 13 if she is an option. Be they raffle, lottery or event tickets, I ask if 13 is available. I don’t know if my gravitation towards the number 13 increases the likelihood that my ticket will win a prize but it does give me a sense of control random numbers just don’t.

Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number 13. Fear of Friday the 13th is known as paraskevidekatriaphobia, according to the Urban Legends section of www.ask.com.

Why are people frightened by the number 13? Why is it unlucky? There are several theories. A coven of witches is comprised of 13. Jesus had 12 disciples and he made the 13th diner at the last supper. His subsequent crucifixion took place on Friday, making the day inherently perilous...
