The best — and worst — of 2012

Well, here we are, two days after Christmas and fattened by turkey or ham or both. Tomorrow we’ll start that diet that we’ve been talking about. And, we still have 363 shopping days before next Christmas. But, depending upon the “deal” that we got, we may have up to two years to pay for this year’s bundle of gifts.

This is also the time of the year that various organizations determine the “best” and the “worst” of 2012. Unfortunately, there weren’t very many “best” things that occurred this year.

On television, however, two of the best series kept us entertained. “Homeland” started with the type of blockbuster show that is usually reserved for the end of a series run, while “Boardwalk Empire” began with Nucky (the “boss” of Atlantic City during prohibition) becoming a philanthropist, probably the last thing his character had in mind. Both shows are finished for the season, but they’ll be back with new surprises in 2013. One problem, they’re both rated “R” and only shown on cable.

Naturally, the “best” also includes Time magazine’s “Person of the Year.” The prestigious list includes 10 “finalists,” but I’ll just list the top five. I’m not sure how the editors determine the criteria, but here are the results...
