Ships at sea or go float your boat. Chris Miller of Leighton’s, and Steve King, the wrought iron guy, have brought it to the attention of this ever-searching-for-items scribe that boat races will soon be held in Madera. Where I can’t say…yet, but while covering a story along the River Trail and looking at the riverbed, or bottom, I can safely say they will not be held on the river just west of Gateway Drive as they were in the 1950s. Maybe dune bug races, but certainly no boat races.

Birthday wishes this Sunday to longtime pal Terry Gallagher, and to Elsa Pond, the wife of my buddy, Buddy Pond, and to my good friend, John “Suds” Sudduth. Now there’s a group to go along with those other Sunday (May 26) birthday celebs, John Wayne, singers Hank Williams Jr. and Stevie Nicks, Jay Silverheels, the original Tonto and pal of the Lone Ranger, and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.
Who’s that you ask? Or maybe you know that even in the late 1700s she was a writer and feminist (they had them even then). But most importantly she was the mother of Mary W. Shelley who wrote a little prose we’re all familiar with — at least the film version: “Frankenstein.” But back to the top terrific three, Happy Birthday.
