Ryan Beavers enjoyed a tremendous junior season for the Madera South baseball team. He was a pivotal component in the Stallions winning their first North Sequoia League title and advancing to the Central Section Division III championship game.

He earned first team AllNYL honors. And the kid whose greatest love and passion was baseball since starting T-Ball at 3 years old was looking forward to a stellar senior season.

Two days before last Christmas, Beavers hopped in his Jeep Wrangler to drive from his home in the country to town. He wanted a special gift for his mom, so he headed to Leighton’s Jewelers.

It was 10:30 a.m. and no one was on the road. But as he traveled on Story Road past the Amtrak station, he noticed a car race up behind him. He looked in the rearview mirror and saw the car try to pass him...
