ST. JOACHIM SCHOOL CELEBRATION -- Students Don Sellai and Jennifer Martini got together with school alumnus Helen Barsotti and Sister Encarnacion Ortega, RCM, to celebrate the school's "60 Years of Excellence." They are planning a big birthday celebration on April 30, 1988, at Hatfield Hall. Any alumni who haven't been contacted are urged to call the school or Nancy Rigby.

BIG "SAVE THE TOWER" DONATION -- Adopt the Tower Committee members Patrick O'Rouke and Mildred Glichwert were given the largest single contribution to date from the Madera Historical Society. MCHS members Bobby Thatcher and Jeanie Turpenen handed over $19,200 in cash and pledges, which the Society has gathered to save the city's original water tower on South D Street.

DAVID VARGAS, BEEF WINNER -- David Vargas of the Dixieland 4-H Club was named county and regional winner in the 4-H beef program. David started raising beef at 2 years of age when a family friend gave him a heifer calf. Two years later his grandfather gave him a cow, and with these two females, which he had bred, he started a steer project. David is the son of Ron and Joan Vargas and is a freshman at Madera High School.

RESTROOM FOR FIREMAN -- Volunteer firefighters at the Madera Acres station will no longer have to use their imaginations to answer nature's call. Supervisors agreed to rent portable toilets for the station, which lacks permanent restroom facilities. Board members voted 4-1 in favor of renting the facilities. Supervisor Rick Jensen opposed the move, saying the board should provide facilities for all volunteer stations...
